The United States discards more food than any other country in the world. Nearly 40 million tons of food (80 billion pounds) are wasted every year. When restaurants participate in commercial composting, they divert tons of this waste from landfills.
Every week, two to three 32-gallon lined totes are picked up from Alice & Friends’ by Collective Resource Compost for processing. Collective Resource Compost is a woman-owned recycling company that services 2,600 residential and 165 commercial customers in the Chicagoland area.
We participate in this process because we believe in normalizing sustainability.
What are the benefits of composting?
Some of the Benefits of composting:
Create healthy soil. When we compost organic waste, not only are we giving vitamins and minerals back to the earth, but we’re also reducing the need to use pesticides in soil.
Reduce the production of methane gas. When we send less waste to the landfill, we produce less methane gas and help slow down global warming.
Contribute to a more sustainable future. There’s simply no replacement for our earth. When we take the lead in making small changes, we support a better life for us and the next generation.
There’s still more to be done. One step at a time.
Working together to normalize sustainability practices can help halt climate change. This is why when you consume food at Alice & Friends you’re not only reducing carbon footprint* but also supporting a restaurant that regularly participates in composting.
*A person who goes vegan can reduce their carbon footprint by up to 73%.
