6 Best Things to Do in Oak Park, IL

This is our first summer in Oak Park and we’ve been having the time of our lives. As Oak Park’s only fully vegan restaurant, we feel like the queen, not of hearts, but of Marion St. Our front glass windows sans decor, offer the best view to find that people-watching while enjoying delicious food can be a real hobby.

Just west of downtown Chicago, the charming village of Oak Park is known for its rich history, Prairie School residences, and tree-lined streets. Notably, strolling downtown to find the best shops, events, and historic homes is our second favorite thing to do.

Here are six of our best ways to experience Oak Park:

1. Tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s Home & Studio

Oak Park is world-famous as the birthplace of Prairie style architecture. A visit to the Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio is the perfect way to learn about one of America’s most influential architects. At the same time, seeing the neighborhood that inspired many of his iconic designs.

If you’re an architecture enthusiast or simply appreciate beautiful homes, this stop belongs at the top of your list.

2. Visit Ernest Hemingway’s Birthplace Museum

Literature lovers won’t want to miss Ernest Hemingway’s Birthplace Museum. The beautifully restored Victorian home offers a glimpse into the early life of one of America’s greatest writers and the community that shaped his childhood.

Guided tours are approximately 50 minutes and share fascinating stories about Hemingway’s family, his upbringing, and how Oak Park influenced his work. It’s a wonderful stop for history buffs and anyone who enjoys discovering the stories behind famous figures.

3. Spend an Afternoon Exploring Downtown

Downtown Oak Park is full of locally owned boutiques, bookstores, cafés, and public art. It’s the perfect place to spend a leisurely afternoon browsing shops, supporting local businesses, and discovering something new.

Of course, no afternoon downtown is complete without good food. There are more than a hundred restaurants, many offering vegetarian options and a few vegan. But if you’re looking for a 100% vegan menu, Alice and Friends in Oak Park is your best choice. For sweet treats, we have more than a dozen options every day plus limited-time specials!

4. Enjoy Free Summer Concerts and Community Events

Late summer is one of the best times to enjoy Oak Park outdoors. Through the end of August, the Park District hosts its popular Concerts in the Park series at Scoville Park, featuring free live music on Sunday evenings.

If you’re visiting during the week, Thursday Night Out has become one of our favorite evening events. Every Thursday from early June through late August, Marion Street transforms into a lively pedestrian gathering with local musicians, outdoor dining, shopping, and neighbors catching up over great food.

Some of our favorite seasonal bites include Baklava from Jerusalem Cafe or pastries like the Chocolate Banana Muffin from Broken Tart (closes at 3:00 P.M.). Before planning your visit, check Downtown Oak Park’s community calendar for seasonal events, sidewalk sales, festivals, and family-friendly activities happening throughout the year.

5. Visit the Oak Park Conservatory

Need a peaceful escape? The Oak Park Conservatory is one of our favorite hidden gems. Wander through lush tropical plants, colorful seasonal flowers, and beautifully maintained gardens without leaving town. It’s quiet, relaxing, and makes a perfect break from a busy afternoon.

After your visit, stop by for one of our refreshing drinks, like a Mango Lassi or Thai Tea, or enjoy one of our comfort-food favorites like our Mac & Cheese or Bánh Mi Sandwich. Our Bánh Mì has quietly become one of the most-loved dishes on our menu. Crispy baguette, house-pickled vegetables, fresh jalapeños, cilantro, and savory plant-based protein all coming together in every bite.

6. Visit the Oak Park Farmers’ Market

Every Saturday through October, the Oak Park Farmers’ Market brings together local farmers, bakers, florists, and artisans in one of the community’s most beloved weekly traditions. You’ll find fresh seasonal produce, baked goods, flowers, and specialty products while supporting local growers and makers.

Oak Park has also become an increasingly welcoming destination for plant-based eaters, making it easy to fill your market bag with fresh ingredients before enjoying a satisfying vegan meal nearby.

From world-famous architecture and literary history to lively community events, peaceful gardens, and incredible local dining, this village has a way of making every visit memorable. And if your adventures bring you to Marion Street, we’d love to welcome you in. Stop by for a meal, grab a refreshing drink, or enjoy a little people-watching from our front windows.
